The first major of the year was played this weekend for the Southern Nevada Golf Association at Coyote Springs Golf Club!
The 2016 Southern Nevada Amateur Championship was played June 25-26 at the beautiful Nicklaus course. It also marks the start of the 2016-2017 Pacific Coast Amateur Points Race!
The championship division was won by Philip Rowe, who is the assistant coach at UNLV for the Men’s Golf Team and a former Walker Cup player. Rowe shot 71-70=141 for a two day total of three under par. That score clipped Jack Trent, who is going to UNLV in the fall of 2017, by two shots.
3rd Place was awarded to fellow UNLV Rebel Taylor Montgomery, who shot a new competitive course record at Coyote Springs by shooting a 66. His two day total was a 145 after a lackluster 79 on the first day.

In the Senior Division, Gary Carpendale led by 1 stroke over Bobby Hakes after 18 holes, but fell apart going into the back nine during the final round. This allowed John Turk to post a smooth 75 during the final round and sneak into a sudden death playoff with Bobby Hakes. Hakes proved to be too tough and birdied the first playoff hole for his first major championship. |

In Senior Net Division, Bobby Hakes shot 147 Net, but won the Senior Scratch Division, so he couldn’t win both. This allowed Bryan Link to win his first SNGA major championship. |

In the Super Senior Division, Kevin Parrish was leading by 3 strokes after 18 holes and 4 strokes after 27 holes, but the legend of Frank Abbott was hanging around, ready for a comeback. Abbott was able to tie Parrish by Hole 36, then entered a sudden death playoff. Abbott eventually won to add to his resume of majors with the SNGA. Parrish finished alone in second place. |

In the Super Senior Net Division, Jim Burger posted 151 net over two days to tie Frank Abbott, but since Abbott won the scratch division, he couldn’t win them both, letting Burger win another SNGA major. Bruce Swanson finished in second place with a 153 Net Total. |

In the Net Division, it was an open race going into the back nine on Sunday. After Paul Kulon struggled on the front nine, all players took advantage. In the end, Gary McCollum ended up winning the championship with a steady par on hole 18. Shawn Smith finished in second place, one stroke back from McCollum. |
