Black Mountain Golf & Country Club

Black Mountain Golf and Country Club is your place if you appreciate small town, down home golf. This course came to life in 1958 when several local business leaders and organizations worked together to create a country club experience in Henderson, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas. More than 50 years later, Black Mountain, a semi-private facility, is alive and well.

For several years, Black Mountain remained a nine-hole course, with golfers enjoying the Founders Nine, but in 1963, with the course becoming very popular, a new nine—the Horizon –was built. Both nines were designed by Bob Baldock. The holes meander through the historic homes of the area. The course is the 3rd oldest in the Vegas area and doesn’t overpower golfers with the bells and whistles of newer resort courses but offers a solid test of golf at a lower price point. A third nine was built in 2002 but is no longer open for play.

The spirit of Black Mountain is captured by a quote from original founding member Lou LaPorta. “The mantra of Black Mountain has always been ‘play golf’, and we have a very active, avid golfing membership,” LaPorta said when the club was celebrating 50 years of golf and camaraderie. LaPorta was the youngest member of the original founders.

The opening three holes of the Founders Nine have affectionately become known as Black Mountain’s “Amen Corner,” and will test the best players’ skills. The par 4, second hole, measures 430 yards from the back tees, and history shows with the prevailing headwind, it plays much longer. The par 3, third hole, plays 188 yards to a small, heavily bunkered green with treacherous undulations to complete the 3-hole challenge. The 9th at the founders is also a unique finishing hole that doglegs right at the end to a tucked green.

A large clubhouse with meeting space, restaurant and pro shop are onsite at Black Mountain. The course is located about 25 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip in the southeast part of the valley. Rates are always under $100 at Black Mountain for visiting Las Vegas golfers.
