PGA Jr. League Brings Golf to the Future

Overall, the PGA Jr. League, created and operated by professionals from the PGA of America, is a huge success. Tens of thousands of junior golfers 13 years and younger are playing the team golf concept around the country, bringing new players—and more importantly, new families—to the game of golf.

Locally here in the Southern Nevada, that is also true. The official season kickoff of the PGA Jr. League was held Saturday, May 21, at TPC Las Vegas and another huge season, which culminates in playoffs and all-star teams, is underway.

The clinic at TPC Las Vegas, was also a city-wide celebration of junior golf, held at the former host course of PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions tournaments. The course is celebrating a 20-year anniversary in 2016.
“To me, PGA Jr. League is special because it has finally given kids the opportunity to learn golf in a team atmosphere and really makes learning the game of golf fun,” said Nolan Halterman, the assistant GM at Anthem Country Club who also serves as Southern Nevada PGA Jr. League Golf chairman. “The kids get to wear team jerseys just like they do when playing soccer, basketball or baseball and they have a teammate to share in the fun of playing golf.  It no longer has to be a game that they learn on their own. Golf never had anything like this for kids until PGA Junior League arrived.”

Some of golf’s biggest—and coolest stars—have jumped in to support the league and are ambassadors.

“I think, especially for young people, bringing them together in a team concept like PGA Junior League Golf and making them feel part of one goal or one purpose is incredibly valuable,” said Rory McIlroy. “They have the chance to accomplish something great together.”

“I was so lucky to grow up playing golf surrounded by great mentors, so now I want to help grow the game for the next generation of golfers, helping provide them with all the opportunities I had,” said Lexi Thompson.
