Greg Horodesky saved his best for last as he birdied his final hole of the tournament to win the Championship Division by one stroke.

It was Horodesky’s second win of 2025 but his first individual title. It was also the second time he’s won the LV City Am as he was the champ in 2010.

“The stars lined up,” he said. “I was a nervous wreck trying to get it done.”

He came to his final hole of the tournament knowing he needed a birdie to win.

“I knew what I had to do,” he said. “I had a perfect number for my second shot, a 7-iron, and let my mind drift a little and didn’t execute the shot and left it short of the bunker. Hitting a flop shot over a bunker in any situation is tough. This one had a little more pressure. I’ve been practicing the shot and told myself it’s just like practice. I knocked it to about 18 inches and made the putt.”

There was added pressure as he had an extra fan on hand as his dad, Darel, followed him over the final few holes.

“It’s been a long time since he watched me play,” Horodesky said. “It was nerve-wracking enough but he just said to keep going. He showed up as I walked off the green after birdieing No. 2 (his 11th hole of the day) and watched me finish it up.”

He said it’s always nice to win an SNGA event, but the majors are always special.

“Any time you’re trying to win a major it’s a challenge,” he said. “You’ve got the best fields and it’s just a grind from start to finish. Everyone works a little harder and focuses a little more. They are majors for a reason.”

And he said Muni seems to bring out the best.

“It seems like this is always one of the strongest fields,” he said. “The college kids show up…everyone just wants to play Muni. It’s one of the oldest courses, it’s a tradition, it’s a challenge and it’s fun.”

Chris Kanthak’s final round was an up-and-down affair that ended with him winning for the first time in 2025.

Kanthak, who had a round that included five straight net birdies to close out his first nine holes, won a scorecard playoff to win his first major.

He added a string of four straight birdies in his second nine but finished with back-to-back bogeys that forced him into the scorecard playoff.

“It was a pretty wild two days,” Kanthak said. “(Saturday) I got off to a rough start but got it back at the end.”

He said the second round was different.

“Today, I started off hot,” he said of his five straight birdies to end his first nine holes. “But then when I saw I was in the lead, it got into my head a little and I got into trouble.”

He posted a bogey on his 11th hole and a double bogey on the next hole to fall out of the lead.

“After those two holes I stopped looking at the leaderboard and just wanted to play my game,” he said. “I knew I had some strokes coming in and I got it turned around.”

He had net birdies on the next four holes and wound up with the win.

“It’s my first major and my first trophy and it means a lot,” he said. “I won at Cascata last year and got a medal but this one’s different with a trophy. I was second, third or fourth in the majors last year but to win one is amazing.”

He wasn’t sure he was even going to be able to play in the tournament.

“It’s my first tournament since my wife (Huyen) and I had our second child (Richter),” he said. “Coming out here really left her with her hands full.”

He did give her the good news that he had won.

“I told her I was coming home with the bacon,” he said with a laugh.

He added that the impact of a major on his resume is exciting.

“These majors have big fields with a lot of great players,” he said. “To be able to compete with them and to win really boosts my confidence.”
