The 2023 Southern Nevada Amateur is scheduled for May 15-16 at the historic Las Vegas National Golf Club. The course is a past host of an LPGA major championship, dozens of PGA Tour tournaments and was one of three courses used during the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational when Tiger Woods earned his initial PGA Tour victory.
It is a local and visitor favorite. Plus, course management, which includes general manager Coy Wood and director of golf Joe Kelly, embrace amateur golf. Kelly is a Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inductee and the National clubhouse is home to the Hall’s official exhibit.
Las Vegas National, which was originally called the Stardust Country Club, and the Women’s Southern Nevada Amateur, are a perfect match due to the long history of each.
The 2022 champions of the Women’s Southern Nevada Amateur were Cassidy Phelan, who was a sophomore-to-be at Colorado Mesa, the championship division winner while Theresa Summers earned the net title.
A victory in a tournament with the prestige of the Women’s Southern Nevada Amateur is a huge confidence builder and a measuring stick for the status of a golfer’s form.
“I knew I was up against great competition,” said Phelan, while also commenting that her hard work paid off with the impressive result.
But just part of the story is the individual competition. For around 16 other golfers, the goal of playing in the Silver Cup Matches against the Northern Women’s Golf Association is an annual goal. The Women’s Southern Nevada Amateur is a qualifier for the team.
“If you make the Silver Cup team, you’ll work from when the Women’s Southern Nevada Amateur until the Silver Cup week to get ready,” Jackson says. “It’s a really big deal for everyone to get on that team.”
