Debbie Love (Gross) and Sandy Barletta (Net) won championships in the WSNGA’s 2023 Women’s Senior Stableford tournament. The two-day event was held Oct. 2-3, 2023, at Aliante Golf Club, which marked a triumphant return to the course in North Las Vegas.–by Bill Bowman, Las Vegas Golf Insider

The tournament used a Modified Stableford format where players were awarded four points for an eagle, three points for a birdie, two points for a par, one point for a bogey and zero points for a double bogey or worse. It was the first time in several years the WSNGA had played an event at Aliante.

Gross

Debbie Love rallied on the second day to win the Gross portion of the tournament with 57 points.

“It was the first time playing this format on my own,” Love said. “It was a lot of fun. I hadn’t played Aliante in a long time and it was in good shape. And the weather was great.”

She added she had a challenge ahead of her heading into the final day as she was three points behind.

“I knew I was behind and I didn’t have anything to lose so I just went for it,” she said. “And it worked out well.”

She said her overall game was solid…for the most part.

“I chipped and putted well,” she said. “And I didn’t miss a fairway. I have new irons in the bag and I was coming up short on my irons but my chipping and putting really picked me up.”

After having no birdies on the first day, Love picked up three birdies during the second round.

“There’s a big difference going from an 86 to a 74,” she said with a laugh.

Net

Sandy Barletta had four gross birdies (net eagles) the first day and posted 75 points to win the Net Division.

“It just felt like everything was clicking for me,” she said. “The driver was working and that helped a lot and the putting was good. And those net eagles really got me going. I wasn’t expecting that at all.”

She said being near the top after the first round was exciting.

“I wasn’t keeping track of the scoring in terms of points but I had an idea that I was near the top,” she said. “I had 36 points the first day and thought if I did that again today, I would be OK.”

In the end, she said the tournament’s second day was a great test for her.

“I knew it could go either way,” she said of the finale. “I wasn’t really concerned with winning…I just wanted to play a good round.”

And the course fit her gameplan perfectly.

“Aliante really appealed to my eye,” she said. “The greens were good. I’ve also been taking lessons to get better and everything just came together for me.”
