Tanner Johnson (Championship), James Corey (Senior) and Steve McPherson (Silver) won gross titles in the 2025 SNGA Winter Classic. Michael Yap (Net), John Bobroski (Senior) and Anthony Becker (Silver) won net titles in the tournament held Dec. 20-21, 2025, at Cascata Golf Club.—by Bill Bowman, Las Vegas Golf Insider

The tournament featured Stableford scoring. A double eagle was worth seven points, an eagle was worth five points, a birdie was worth three points, a par was worth two points, a bogey resulted in one point and a double bogey or worse was worth zero points.

The event was the final official SNGA tournament as a new era begins in 2025 with the creation of Nevada Golf. The Nevada Golf schedule will still feature a full tournament schedule in 2026 for the Southern Nevada region.

Championship

Tanner Johnson picked up 25 points over his final 12 holes (11 pars and a birdie) in winning the Championship Division.

It was Johnson’s first SNGA crown.

Johnson is the grandson of Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame member Dave Johnson who was the Desert Inn Director of Golf from 1976-2000 before moving to help open Cascata.

“I couldn’t wait to call him up after this,” Johnson said of a call to his grandfather. “Kind of completes the circle with both of us and Cascata.”

Johnson’s play on the back nine sealed the victory as he posted 13 pars, four birdies and a lone bogey over the two days.

“This was my first time playing Cascata,” he said. “I just tried to have good course management and pay attention to every shot.”

That process worked well.

“I didn’t get in much trouble off the tee and that helped,” he said. “The consistency on the back nine was important and that long stretch of pars and one birdie really paid off.”

Michael Yap opened the final round with 17 points in his first six holes (one net eagle, two net birdies, two net pars and a natural par) in winning the Net title by five strokes.

It was Yap’s first SNGA title.

“I’ve got to give a lot of credit to my playing partners,” Yap said. “They made me feel comfortable and helped me with the rules. It was just my second Stableford tournament so it was great to win.”

Yap said he’s getting more comfortable playing tournaments.

“I’ve been an SNGA member for awhile but I haven’t played in many tournaments,” he said. “I’ve never been sure if I’m good enough to compete. But winning will boost my confidence going forward. There’s a lot of luck involved but I’m happy with the win. I didn’t think I could do it.”

He said his game-plan was simple.

“I just tried to play within myself,” he said. “I tried to hit fairways and greens. I played a little conservative and didn’t attack often. I just wanted to keep the ball in the fairway and hit greens.”

James Corey won for the second time in 2025, both coming in Stableford events.

This was Corey’s first individual title this year but he also won a team title with Rick Sepp in the 2025 SNGA Tour Stableford Championship.

“You gotta go with what works,” Corey said with a laugh. “It’s a great format and Cascata is a great course. I’ve had a lot of success out here.”

He added the victory came at a nice time.

“It’s a great way to end the year and also a great way to start out the points race for next year. I’m very happy.”

Corey said he didn’t start out the final round on a high note, but got it turned around quickly.

“My driver wasn’t very accurate in the beginning but I made an adjustment on the fourth hole and figured it out,” he said. “I also made a couple of putts and just played consistent golf. I hit a lot of fairways and greens while the other guys struggled a little and it all worked out well.”

John Bobroski won for the fifth time in 2025 as he’s won four individual titles and a team crown. Bobroski won in a scorecard playoff.

“I just played solid today,” Bobroski said. “The weather was perfect and the course was in great shape.”

But it wasn’t all roses for Bobroski.

“I had 34 putts today and 30 putts yesterday,” he said. “I didn’t hit my approach shots that close but it was still a solid round.”

He said his play on one hole summed up how challenging Cascata can be.

“The first day, my last hole was No. 3, a par-5,” he said. “My drive must have hit the cart path because I only had 110 yards in. I hit my approach shot to 12-15 feet and made the putt for eagle. Today, I made a bogey on the hole. You just never know about this game.”

He said ending 2025 at Cascata is a bonus for players.

“That’s one of the things that makes the SNGA so nice,” he said. “We get to play a great course like Cascata and play with a great group of players. There’s a lot of great camaraderie out here.”

Steve McPherson played consistent golf both days–scoring 16 points on the front nine each day and 15 points on the back-nine each day–in winning his first SNGA title.

“I hit the ball great for two days,” he said. “But I three-putted 11 times. I hadn’t played Cascata before and I could never get the feel for the greens. Today, I had more putts that were uphill and that helped.”

He was very impressed with his play in the final round.

“I played beautifully today,” he said. “I couldn’t hit it any better. I did make a couple of mistakes but overall, I hit it great.”

He said his play on the 18th hole, his eighth of the day, got him going.

“I hit my tee shot into the left hazard,” he said. “I pitched it out and then hit it on the green and then three-putted for bogey. That was already my fourth three-putt and really made me mad. After that, I started attacking and made a couple of birdies coming in and it was good.”

Anthony Becker had three birdies in a five-hole stretch in his final nine holes (two net and one natural) and raced to victory.

It was Becker’s third SNGA win this season.

“I’m finally playing some good golf and I’m tickled to death about it,” Becker said. “I’m driving it straight…even though it’s about 190 yards. I can still make shots and played pretty well.”

He said the key was the par-3 fourth hole.

“I shortsided myself on the hole,” he said. “But then I chipped in for the first time this year and it was all good.”

He said playing Cascata was a fitting way to end the year.

“It’s such a beautiful course,” he said. “It’s an hour drive from Aliante to get here but it’s worth every second of it. We’re so lucky to be able to play out here. I can’t thank the SNGA enough.”
