Matt Mitchell has been claiming SNGA trophies continually over the last few years. Now, Mitchell, who most recently won the Clark County Amateur, has claimed a very prestigious honor as low amateur in the Nevada Open. –By Bill Bowman. Mitchell was the only amateur to make the 36-hole cut at the Palms and CasaBlanca courses in Mesquite, Nevada. The event rules and scoring are overseen by Southern Nevada Golf Association staff and rules officials each year. Professional Beau Breault won the 2025 Nevada Open, birdieing the sixth playoff hole to beat John Greco for the title and the $31,350 top prize. Previous Nevada Open champs have gone on to play the PGA Tour including Tom Lehman, Taylor Montgomery and others.
Mitchell, who has five Southern Nevada Golf Association titles in 2025, finished with rounds of 71-68-70—209 and his seven-under-par total left him tied for 39th.
“This week I was a little sloppier than normal but I was able to come back after some rough starts in all three rounds,” Mitchell said.
He said playing with the pros was great for the simple fact it was a chance to gain experience on a higher level.
“It was very unique to play with the pros,” he said. “Today, I played with two very veteran players with PGA Tour experience, Tyler Aldridge and Mike Hultberg. They definitely have better routines than I do, especially around the greens. They take a little more time and it shows. On chips, they aren’t just guessing…they have it really dialed in.”
Mitchell said that play around the greens made an impact.
“I’ll definitely work on my game around the greens a little more going forward,” he said. “It was impressive seeing their sharpness around the greens. I saw it up close on how it worked so well for them. Their shots took a lot of pressure off most putts and that’s always a good thing.”
While this was Mitchell’s first time playing the event, he said it won’t be his last.
“This was such a great experience,” he said. “I’m looking forward to playing in it again.”
