Players of the Year

A look back at the best of the SNGA’s best with comments from Tim Brand, Assistant Executive Director

Two-Day Championship Events

Matt Mitchell – Championship

A winner four times including the Southern Nevada Amateur and a runner up at the Nevada State Amateur, added up to an unbelievable season for Matt Mithell. Tim Brand: “He won the points race by more than 700 points. His game continues to improve, and he is incredibly well liked and respected by fellow competitors. Matt also qualified for and competed in two USGA National Championships in 2024. He is an incredibly deserving Player of the Year.”

Chris Kanthak – Net

This was one of the closer points races in 2024 as Chris Kanthak edged Trevor Coss by 30.5 points. Tim Brand: “Chris really found his form towards mid/late summer, culminating in his lone victory of 2024 at the Cascata Amateur in August. Kanthak’s incredibly consistent play at the SNGA Major Championships (4th at the SNGA Championship, T3rd at the Southern Nevada Amateur Championship, and 2nd at the Clark County Amateur Championship) were key in his season.

Todd Roberts – Senior Gross

You could say Todd Roberts had an Ace of a year because his hole-in-one at the Clark County Senior Am clinched his second major and 5th win of the year. Tim Brand: “I feel like I am running out of things to say here that haven’t been said already. This is Todd’s third Senior Player of the Year in a row and 4th since 2019. The consistency he has with all aspects of his game is the most impressive thing to witness. His fellow competitors know that coming down to the back nine, they are going to have to beat him because he won’t beat himself. Overall, the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inductee has won five player of the year honors.

Brian Freymueller – Senior Net , SNGA Tour Net

We had to adjust the format of this program layout for Brian Freymueller because he is a Player of the Year in two divisions. He earned the two-day senior net honor and the 1-day SNGA Tour Series net award. Combined, he won four times. Tim Brand: “I am very happy for Brian. He really had an incredible year. He is an avid supporter of the SNGA and competes in as many events throughout the year as he can. He has played so well over the years, proven by the fact that he has finished inside the Top 6 of the Senior Net Player of the Year race every single year since 2020. It was a nice double dip for Brian because winning one Player of the Year wards is tough enough, but to win two in a season is unprecedented. This SNGA Tour Series Net Player of the Year award is arguably the toughest to win due to the large field sizes. It came down to the final event –as per usual—and Brian came out on top. A big congratulations to Brian on a historic year. He is a deserving winner and I am glad to give him these awards at the Tournament of Champions.

Steve Fink – Silver

Domination is what the 2024 season was for Steve Fink as he won the points list by nearly 240 points despite competing in the Silver division for half the season. He has been winning SNGA titles for decades. Tim Brand: “Steve is as great of a person as he is a player, and he is one heck of a player! Steve did not start competing in the Silver Division in 2024 until May, but once he started playing, the wins started rolling in. Five wins in seven events can definitely be referred to as ‘getting the job done’. Steve is an incredibly well-liked and well-respected player, and this award is another notch on the belt for a long time great.

George Yocum – Silver Net

Two wins and always a consistent finish every time he teed it up were the hall marks of George Yocum’s 2024 season. Tim Brand: “George has been a consistent SNGA tournament player for a long time. Even though this is his first Silver Net Player of the Year title, he does have past overall Net Player of the Year titles. George finished inside the Top 5 in all eight events in which he competed in 2024. It would be very difficult to be more consistent than that. This is a well-deserved accolade for a long time SNGA member and tournament player.”

SNGA Tour Series Players of the Year

Greg Horodesky – Championship

Greg Horodesky won twice in 2024 and is a very accomplished SNGA player and major winner, but the torch is being passed. Tim Brand: “Greg has one of the simplest and nicest looking golf swings I have seen and is why he is a threat to win any tournament he plays. Finishing inside the Top 3 in seven of eight events he competed in is a recipe for success. I also have some advice for Greg. Greg has a 14-year-old son, Nick, who is quickly becoming one of the best junior golfers in Nevada, so, Greg, keep earning these awards while you can, because I have a feeling Nick is looking forward to beating up on you in the years to come!”

John Bobroski – Senior

John Bobroski has been planning great golf for a while and won twice in 2024 on the SNGA Tour series. He also closed 2024 with a victory at the SNGA Winter Classic, his first two-day title. Tim Brand: “John is the back-to-back Tour Series Senior Player of the Year, and it is no surprise because he  finished inside the Top 5 in every event he played. From my perspective, John seems to have a nice balance of competing as hard as he can, while still enjoying himself and the camaraderie that comes competing against his fellow competitors.

Dave Foggia – Silver

When David Foggia teed it up in 2024 on the SNGA Tour Series, most likely he would walk away the champ and a back-to-back winner of the SNGA Tour Series Silver Player of the Year. Tim Brand: “With five wins in eight events, including winning the end of the year Tour Championship, Dave earned the title by more than 235 points. This was the largest margin of victory in the Tour Series by any Player of the Year. He has been a force in the Silver Division ever since he started playing and I have no reason to believe he won’t continue to rack up the wins.
