The Triple Crown Amateur was played the last three days at some of the finest golf courses the Las Vegas Valley has to offer: Dragon Ridge, South Shore, and Southern Highlands.
The championship division was won by Jack Trent, who is a Las Vegas Junior Golf Members and future member of the Men’s UNLV Golf Team. Trent shot 76-72-68=216 for a three day total of one over par. Rounding out the Top 3 was Jason Margetts and future University of New Mexico Golfer Sam Dickey.
In the Senior Division, John Turk led by 2 strokes over Gary Carpendale after 36 holes and did everything right the final round to keep the field at bay. Turk posted rounds of 70-73-74=217 to extend on his lead and claim the divisional title by 4 shots. Carpendale held second place through two rounds, but was ran down in the final round by Gary Lanzen, whose smooth 73 allowed him to leapfrog Carpendale for 2nd place.
In Senior Net Division, Jim LiCausi used back-to-back net 67’s to capture the crown. LiCausi quality play propelled him to a 10-shot win.
In the Super Senior Division, it was more of the same as Frank Abbott got out to a 7-shot lead after Round 1 and never looked back. Abbott continued to put his petal to the medal in the closing two rounds resulting in and extremely comfortable 16 shot victory over SNGA newcomer Robert Konsdorf. Abbott’s win adds to his resume of Southern Nevada Golf Association victories.
In the Super Senior Net Division, Larry Agan posted 211 net over three days to clear Frank Abbott by 9 shots. Since Abbott won the scratch division, second place was awarded to Stephen Sitar who fired a 230 Net.
In the Net Division, it was an open race going into the back nine on Tuesday. Mark Cox and Andy Sessa were neck and neck after two rounds, but Cox was able to post a Net 69 to lay claim to the victory over Sessa. Andy Sessa finished 2-shots back of Cox with a Net 223.

The US Amateur Qualifier wrapped up at Las Vegas National this afternoon. 65 golfers representing many states and countries took aim at clinching 2 invitations to Oakland Hills Country Club, August 15-21.
After Round 1, Las Vegas local and UNLV golfer Ben Davis was tied with Van Thomas, another local, for the tournament lead. Lurking just 1 shot back was Southern California Junior Golfer Edwin Kuang.
Heading into the Round 2, players knew they would have to post a round in the 60’s to give themselves a chance. Kuang began to pull away on the front 9 after shooting a 33 taking a two shot lead into the backside. Thomas stormed back on the back 9 eagling the 13th and 15th hole. In the end, Kuang and Thomas took home medalist honors and qualified for the United States Amateur Championship.

The 2016 Nevada State Amateur took place July 9th-11th in Boulder City at Cascata Golf Club. This years event consisted of a number of past champions including Brady Exber, Ed Fryatt, and defending champion Stephen Sear. 51 came into the event looking to add their name to the illustrious list of past Nevada State Champions.
Recent UNLV graduate AJ McInerney jumped out to an early advantage in Round 1 with a -1 front nine, leading to a 3-under par 69. McInerney, who is turning pro in the near future, had plenty of company atop the leaderboard as past champions Ed Fryatt and Stephen Sear trailed by 1 shot after posting 2-under rounds of 70.
Coming into the Second Round, high winds and poor scoring conditions were expected, which lead to many players dropping back in the field. Round 1 leader McInerney had his game in cruise control on the front nine before a stumble on the back nine leader to a day two 76. This left the door open for fellow UNLV teammate Ben Davis and Andrew Chu to shoot to vault up the leaderboard by shooting impressive 2-under 70’s. Including Chu, five other players were hanging around the top of the leaderboard, all within five shots.
The final group in Round 3 featured plenty of firepower with ’15 champion Stephen Sear, ’92 champion Ed Fryatt, and UNLV golfer Ben Davis. Even though winds were blowing early in the morning, players felt they had an opportunity to put the pedal to the metal and force the other players in the field to play catchup. Making the turn onto the back 9, Davis and Fryatt held a share of the lead with defending champion trailing by 1 shot. After an eagle on 16 and bogey on 17, Stephen Sear (-1 thru 17) knew he only had to make par to join the select group of back-to-back Nevada State Amateur Champions as McInereny was in the clubhouse with an even par 216. After a solid 2-putt, Sears accomplished his goal and hoisted the State Championship Trophy for the second year in a row.

The 2016 Southern Nevada Amateur Championship was played June 25-26 at the beautiful Nicklaus course. It also marks the start of the 2016-2017 Pacific Coast Amateur Points Race!
The championship division was won by Philip Rowe, who is the assistant coach at UNLV for the Men’s Golf Team and a former Walker Cup player. Rowe shot 71-70=141 for a two day total of three under par. That score clipped Jack Trent, who is going to UNLV in the fall of 2017, by two shots.
3rd Place was awarded to fellow UNLV Rebel Taylor Montgomery, who shot a new competitive course record at Coyote Springs by shooting a 66. His two day total was a 145 after a lackluster 79 on the first day.

In the Senior Division, Gary Carpendale led by 1 stroke over Bobby Hakes after 18 holes, but fell apart going into the back nine during the final round. This allowed John Turk to post a smooth 75 during the final round and sneak into a sudden death playoff with Bobby Hakes. Hakes proved to be too tough and birdied the first playoff hole for his first major championship. |

In Senior Net Division, Bobby Hakes shot 147 Net, but won the Senior Scratch Division, so he couldn’t win both. This allowed Bryan Link to win his first SNGA major championship. |

In the Super Senior Division, Kevin Parrish was leading by 3 strokes after 18 holes and 4 strokes after 27 holes, but the legend of Frank Abbott was hanging around, ready for a comeback. Abbott was able to tie Parrish by Hole 36, then entered a sudden death playoff. Abbott eventually won to add to his resume of majors with the SNGA. Parrish finished alone in second place. |

In the Super Senior Net Division, Jim Burger posted 151 net over two days to tie Frank Abbott, but since Abbott won the scratch division, he couldn’t win them both, letting Burger win another SNGA major. Bruce Swanson finished in second place with a 153 Net Total. |

In the Net Division, it was an open race going into the back nine on Sunday. After Paul Kulon struggled on the front nine, all players took advantage. In the end, Gary McCollum ended up winning the championship with a steady par on hole 18. Shawn Smith finished in second place, one stroke back from McCollum. |

Overall, the PGA Jr. League, created and operated by professionals from the PGA of America, is a huge success. Tens of thousands of junior golfers 13 years and younger are playing the team golf concept around the country, bringing new players—and more importantly, new families—to the game of golf.
Locally here in the Southern Nevada, that is also true. The official season kickoff of the PGA Jr. League was held Saturday, May 21, at TPC Las Vegas and another huge season, which culminates in playoffs and all-star teams, is underway.
The clinic at TPC Las Vegas, was also a city-wide celebration of junior golf, held at the former host course of PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions tournaments. The course is celebrating a 20-year anniversary in 2016.
“To me, PGA Jr. League is special because it has finally given kids the opportunity to learn golf in a team atmosphere and really makes learning the game of golf fun,” said Nolan Halterman, the assistant GM at Anthem Country Club who also serves as Southern Nevada PGA Jr. League Golf chairman. “The kids get to wear team jerseys just like they do when playing soccer, basketball or baseball and they have a teammate to share in the fun of playing golf. It no longer has to be a game that they learn on their own. Golf never had anything like this for kids until PGA Junior League arrived.”
Some of golf’s biggest—and coolest stars—have jumped in to support the league and are ambassadors.
“I think, especially for young people, bringing them together in a team concept like PGA Junior League Golf and making them feel part of one goal or one purpose is incredibly valuable,” said Rory McIlroy. “They have the chance to accomplish something great together.”
Information about the PGA Jr. League can be found at pgajlg.com or you can call your local pro. For complete Southern Nevada junior golf info, visit SouthernNevadaJuniorGolf.com.
“I was so lucky to grow up playing golf surrounded by great mentors, so now I want to help grow the game for the next generation of golfers, helping provide them with all the opportunities I had,” said Lexi Thompson.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The Golden Bear twirled his design magic to near perfection with the holes at Coyote Springs, a course located about 45 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip. Coyote Springs burst on to the scene in 2008 with superb accolades and has been thrilling local and visiting golfers ever since.
Coyote Springs is laid out in a sweet and undisturbed setting of natural beauty, captured perfectly at the official CoyoteSprings.com:
“The Coyote Springs setting has been characterized as Nature’s Cradle — a magnificent valley surrounded by majestic mountains and peaks on all four sides. To the north, south and east respectively, are the Delamar Mountains, the Arrow Mountains and Meadow Valley Mountains, each rising to an average elevation of 5,000 feet. And to the west, the Sheep Range, which reaches 9,000 feet into the sky, is snow-capped during the winter months and provides an amazing backdrop for peak season golfers.
“This hallmark setting consists of rolling terrain overlooking a prehistoric riverbed-the Pahranagat Wash-which bisects the Coyote Spring Valley. To the east of the wash, rolling hills transition to a natural mesa commanding excellent views of the valley and surrounding mountain ranges. West of the wash, hills give way to flatter terrain with exceptional views of the mountains.”
Members of the Southern Nevada Golf Association are invited to download the new Coyote Springs app to earn loyalty rewards that include free golf and other cool stuff. Visit the website to download the app today.
Also, Coyote Springs offers an annual discount membership that guarantees the best rates for members in addition to an official GHIN/SNGA handicap. Other perks include food and beverage discounts and four guest passes plus a free round of golf upon sign up.
Coyote Springs is also a host course for high-level events such as the Mesquite Amateur and the upcoming Southern Nevada Amateur Championship June 25-26. The SN Am is an SNGA major.

Rob Jackson, a member of the Southern Nevada Golf Association Southwest Golf Club, served as a United States Marine from 1985-93, and sustained physical injuries in 1991.
He can handle those.
It’s the mental scars from his “many kills” that still haunt him more than two decades later. Dealing with crowds is difficult, and coping with anxiety is a part of his daily process. Playing golf and organizing an annual charity tournament to help fellow veterans (the Greater Nevada Detachment 186 event at Bear’s Best Las Vegas this past weekend) eases the pain but doesn’t make it completely disappear.
“Do my efforts help me feel better?” Jackson asks rhetorically as he thinks about the answer. “Probably yes and no; it definitely makes me feel good to see so many people come out and support such a worthy cause so in that sense it’s very rewarding.”
Jackson is a 10 handicap and just playing the game offers a respite from the memories. At one time he was a 30+ handicap but through hard work and dedication he widdled his scores down to the low eighties and sometimes the high seventies.
“Playing golf on a wide open course helps me cope, for sure,” Jackson says. “I enjoy the outdoors and open space of a golf course and it is a freeing experience for me. I also ride motorcycles and going for a long ride is similar to playing golf. They both provide peace.”
Jackson, as with any soldier in the Marine Corps, believes in putting in a good day’s work, even when it comes to golf.
“I worked really hard to become a pretty good golfer,” Jackson says. “If you put your mind to something and put in the time, it can be done. I believe that and I hope everyone reading this does too.”
Mission of the Greater Detachment 186
Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interests of the United States Marine Corps. This is accomplished by banding together those who are now serving and those who have been honorably discharged from service; voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines and their widows and orphans.

Time and time again, Brady Exber has proved himself the class of Southern Nevada with Championship performances. Sunday was no different at The Laughlin Amateur Championship.
Exber, known in golf circles as ‘The Godfather’, shot even par over two days to win his second championship of the season at Mojave Resort Golf Club this weekend in Laughlin. This follows his win at the Summerlin Amateur Championship in March. Jeremy May finished in second place, eight shots back.
In the Senior Division, John Turk shot four under over 36 holes to top Steven Fink by eight shots. Turk and Fink have been battling back and forth all year, with both players winning all but one Senior Championship in 2016. The Senior Net Championship went to Randy Burton, the 2015 Nevada State Senior Net Champion, who shot two under for two days to win by 7 shots over Michael Campbell.
The Super Senior Division was up for grabs going into round two with 7 players within 5 shots of the lead. Al Kueker emerged from the pack with a second round 70 to win by one shot over Frank Abbott, John Corbin and Kevin Parrish. Kueker shot 146 for two days. The Super Senior Net winner was captured by John Kelley, who rode a first round net 65 to win his third net championship of the 2016 season.
The Net Division was won by Rob Zoine, who beat Kenneth Paul in a playoff to capture his first win of the season.

Well, in this newsletter we talked about how the Southern Nevada Golf Association is helping golf becoming extremely affordable for junior golfers and taking care of a stigma that golf is too expensive.
Now we are bringing more fun to the game and taking care of the thinking by some that golf is boring and old school. The new Southern Nevada Golf Association Social Series kicked off May 12 at Legacy Golf Club, and golfers of all skill levels had a chance to play in a no-pressure situation while enjoying the camaraderie and excitement of a tournament format.
The next event in the SNGA Social Series is scheduled for June 14 at the historic Las Vegas National Golf Club. The theme of the event will bring to life the history of the course with specially made Rat Pack martinis and a pasta bar plus other surprises. Back in the day Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr., and other Rat Pack members, played the course and hung out in the bar area.
As with the event at The Legacy, the social at National will feature 9 holes of golf followed by the social in the 19th hole featuring prize drawings and the food and drinks. The event tees off at 4:30 pm and is only $39 per player and includes the pasta bar and the first Martini. SNGA members and non-members are welcome so bring your friends and have a wonderful day on the course.
Las Vegas National Golf Club is also the home of the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame and golfers in the social series will be able to check out the museum-style exhibit. Las Vegas National is also home to the popular Golfboards, which can be used for an additional fee.
“With everything we do at Las Vegas National, we are committed to making golf as enjoyable and fun as possible,” said Coy Wood, general manager. “Our Golfboards have been a huge success and people love them. That is just one way we make the game more fun, and hosting a SNGA Social Series event is perfect and we look forward to having everyone out to the course for a late afternoon round.”
Las Vegas National is also offering a special 3-round package for only $89. The tee times are unrestricted and are available seven days a week. The annual Player’s Card is also available for $69 and offers rates of $19-35 through Dec. 31.
Also, on Memorial Day Weekend, the National will be grilling free hot dogs for golfers daily Friday through Monday from 10 am – 2 pm.

Jack Trent, a junior at Palo Verde High School and the defending Nevada State Division I champion, has verbally committed to play for his hometown university. Trent is one of the nation’s most coveted recruits.
Trent has been playing—and winning—in Southern Nevada Golf Association tournaments for a couple years. His maturity beyond his years has been evident.
“Jack has unbelievable talent that we haven’t seen in Southern Nevada for quite some time, but it is his maturity and ability to stay the calm in big moments that will make coach Knight and coach Rowe excited about the future,” said Tanner Bown, SNGA Director of Competition.
Trent confirmed his intentions to play at UNLV during a recent phone call, and during his high school season at Palo Verde. He and his team are the favorites to win the titles this year.
“I am looking forward to being a Rebel, and there are several reasons why I made the decision to stay close to home,” said Trent, who moved to Las Vegas a few years ago from his native Australia. “UNLV is a top 25 program, the courses they have access to in Las Vegas are wonderful, they have quality players and a lot of great recruits on the way, and the weather is usually very good here.”
Trent won the 2015 Clark County Amateur, a Southern Nevada Golf Association (SNGA) major. The top golfers in the area, including former PGA Tour player and UNLV All-American Edward Fryatt, and current Rebels Zane Thomas and AJ McInerney, play in SNGA tournaments, making the Clark County win all the more impressive for the young Trent.
“His golf IQ and overall ability for his age are very impressive and are what set him apart,” said Clif Vanetti, Trent’s swing coach. “It’s hard to describe what makes him so special, but he has an extra gear. He definitely has that ‘It’ factor.”
Trent enjoys working with Vanetti because they share similar philosophies.
“He is a feel-based instructor and I’ve always been a feel player,” said Trent. “I don’t like using a lot of technology. I like to feel the shots and watch how the ball reacts, and he agrees with that approach.”
Per NCAA regulations, Knight is unable to comment about Trent.

Its core purpose is to provide youth with access to life changing opportunities through golf. This is achieved through initiatives that include subsidized rounds at partner courses, mentorship opportunities through caddie programs and paid internships, and scholarship grants for qualifying members. Since 2006, over 380,000 rounds have been played by Youth on Course participants and close to one million dollars have been awarded in college scholarships. Currently, Youth on Course serves California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Chicago, and Kansas City, with plans to expand nationwide.
