It was just another historic day at Las Vegas Golf Club during the Las Vegas Champions Classic that honored former champions of the prestigious Las Vegas City Amateur and also helped raise funds for the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association. –By Brian Hurlburt, Las Vegas Golf Insider.

Many former City Am champions played and reminisced about winning what is arguably the most coveted amateur trophy in Las Vegas golf. Among the champions playing were AJ McInerney, Eric Dutt, Frank Acker, Brady Exber, Dr. Bill Harvey, Skyler Ngo, Tyler Mays, Steve Kern, Lou Redden, Brett Sodetz, Steven Fink and Kim Dolan. They were back at “Muni.”

“I was so honored to win because I know the history of this tournament, and I know that it’s always been held at this historic golf course, and I, I always wanted to win it,” says Steve Kern, 1995 champion. “And it was like the crown jewel for Las Vegas to me and, when I did finally win it, I was so honored and I drove home like I was on cloud nine.

Four-time City Am champ and Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inductee Brady Exber says winning this event stands out above the others.

“So, I’ve learned over the years that when I hear other people come up to me and say, ‘oh my gosh, you won that tournament or you won this tournament’ and over the years I’ve had so many people talk to me or ask me about winning the city amateur championship and that’s means everything,” says Exber.

The 2021 version of the Las Vegas City Amateur is scheduled for Oct. 30-31. The Las Vegas City Senior Amateur is Oct. 28-29. Yes, both are being played at the historic Las Vegas Golf Club. Just as it should be.

Las Vegas Golf Club is operated by Arcis Golf, and general manager Ryan Humphreys came up with the idea to honor the champs and help the future of golf.

“The course was built in 1938 and it was the first ever golf course in Las Vegas and is the oldest,” says Humphreys. “And everybody you talk to either grew up playing here, learned to play here, started playing here. So it’s just really nice to have that history here.”
