City Am Preview – Birdie Machine Sodetz Gears Up to Defend Title
Brett Sodetz knows repeating as the Las Vegas City Amateur champion in 2019 won’t be an easy task. The Coronado High senior sizzled throughout the two days last year, especially on the final nine when he posted a seven-under 29 (with five birdies to open the nine and two to finish off the title), en route to a one-stroke victory. Over the two days, he was a birdie machine. –by Bill Bowman, Las Vegas Golf Insider.
This year’s event is Oct. 26-27, 2019, at Las Vegas Golf Club, a course Sodetz blistered over the two days last year. He fired rounds of 66-63—129, 15-under-par.
So what does Sodetz plan to do for an encore this year? “I’ll just try to make more birdies,” he said with a laugh. “I’ll just hit fairways and greens and try to make a lot of putts. The course is pretty straightforward so you have to make a lot of putts to go low.”
As a junior last year at Coronado, Sodetz helped the team win last year’s state team title and he is confident about the team’s title defense.
“We have a lot of depth,” he said. “It should be a good year and hopefully we can repeat and win state again. That’s the plan.”
He’d also like an individual title.
“It would be nice to do it my senior year, that’s for sure,” he said.
Then it will be on to college. But where he’ll go is still up in the air.
“I haven’t committed yet,” he said. “I’m open to different ideas.”
But right now, he’s focusing on his game and getting set for the Las Vegas City Amateur.
“There’s probably a little less pressure this year, I guess,” he said. “Definitely shooting 15-under last year really helped boost my confidence. I know I’ve done it before and I’m playing pretty good golf right now.”
