Historic Las Vegas Golf Club Once Again Hosts City Amateur

It’s difficult to determine for how long Las Vegas Golf Club has hosted the prestigious Las Vegas City Amateur, but it has been decades upon decades … upon decades … upon decades. The best SNGA records show it dating back 50 years and it probably has been longer than that. The course opened in 1938 and was designed by William P. Bell. It hosted an early incarnation of the PGA Tour and is the oldest course in the area. “Every major American city has a revered public golf course that breeds talented young players,” says Jack Sheehan, Las Vegas golf historian and author. “That course is also home to savvy teaching pros whose passion is to mold that talent. In the Entertainment Capital of the world, that course is Las Vegas Golf Club. It’s known to its patrons simply as Muni. Ask any golfer in these parts about Muni, you should be ready for an afternoon of colorful stories.”

Las Vegas Golf Club is a traditional course with hundreds of trees and no homes within the course acreage. However, at one time, Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame superintendent, the late Don “Mac” McCoy, and family, lived on a house located on the back nine. He was so important to the course’s history that a street near the course was unofficially named for him.

Reachable par 5s, a couple short par 3s and a couple long par 3s, and a diverse grouping of par 4 holes make up the memorable layout. Eagles can abound at Muni, evidenced by some historic low rounds shot at the course. But more on those later.

In 2020, the Las Vegas City Amateur will be played at the course Oct. 24-25. The senior version is Oct. 22-23.

If the fabric of Las Vegas golf was ever created, Las Vegas Golf Club would be the yarn that holds it together. Over the years, kids who grew up playing the course went on to become prominent business leaders and even PGA Tour and LPGA Tour players. A diverse crowd of golfers plays it daily and many believe–including this writer–that Las Vegas Golf Club epitomizes what amateur golf is all about.

The course record is 58, set by Monte Money–yes, that’s not made up–and is one of the most legendary rounds in Vegas golf history. Money qualified for three U.S. Open tournaments and will forever be entwined in Vegas golf lore. Money’s grandfather, Norman, was a starter for many years at Muni.

In 2017, 15-year old Andrew Jung shot 60 in the final round to win the City Am.
