Marine Corps League Gives Back After Having Already Given So Much

Las Vegas, Nevada—Members of the United States Marine Corps, most assuredly, have done enough during their active duty to warrant some time off and a chance to smell the roses. They’ve laid down their lives in battle and protected the Stars and Stripes throughout history. Not many would give a second thought to any current or former Marine who wanted to disengage once home.
Fortunately for several worthy organizations in Southern Nevada, and due to the efforts of the Marine Corp League-Greater Nevada Detachment 186, Marines continue to serve the community long after their active duty is over or while stateside on leave. The members of the “186” hold two major fundraisers annually—the Southern Nevada Marine Corps Birthday Ball and a golf tournament—to raise funds, and over the years have helped such organizations as Wounded Warriors Athletics, Boulder City Police Department, Devil Pups Youth Program For America, Junior ROTC, Toys for Tots, Safe Haven, and others.
“A main mission of our organization is to raise funds and help people,” said Rob Jackson, tournament chairman of the 5th Annual Marine Corp League Charity Golf Tournament, which was held recently at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear’s Best Las Vegas. “Our annual Ball is attended by 1,200 people each year and this year our golf tournament sold out after we moved it to Bear’s Best so we are thrilled by the support we received. The more we are supported, the more we can give back to the community that we call home. We are also always looking for the new generation of Marines to join us and become a part of a wonderful group.”
One of the groups supporting the charity tournament was the Southern Nevada Golf Association (SNGA). For interested golfers, the SNGA is the official arm of the United States Golf Association in Southern Nevada and holds regular tournaments, offers a membership that gives away free golf upon signing up and much more. The Marine Corps League—a national organization–perpetuates the traditions and spirit of all Marines and FMF Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains who proudly wear or who have worn the eagle, globe and anchor of the Corps. It was founded in 1923 by World War I hero Major General Commandant John A. Lejeune. The Federal Charter was approved by An Act of the Seventy-Fifth Congress of the United States of America and signed and approved by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 4, 1937.
Today, the League boasts a membership of more than 76,000 men and women, officer and enlisted, active duty, Reserve Marines, honorably discharged Marine Veterans and qualified FMF Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains. For more information on how to become involved visit mclgnd186.org.
