Which golf club in Las Vegas is the best when it comes to a team event? Sounds like an interesting question and many, if not all, of the clubs in the area are likely to look at their club as the one to beat. Well, the Women’s Southern Nevada Golf Association has the perfect format for letting clubs decide the best team right on the course. Team Play, which began for the WSNGA in 2012, is Match Play competition with each golf club putting together four two-person teams.

And the event is becoming more and more popular as 14 clubs or organizations have teams entered for 2020. In fact one club, Chimera, has two entries.

“It’s just a lot of fun,” says Nancy Lauback, WSNGA Team Play coordinator. “It’s a great way to meet other ladies from across the valley. And, actually from Mesquite as well, as they also have a team.”

Lauback added the match play format gives the women a new challenge they may not have been part of before–team play.

“Some players may not be comfortable with this type of format and be hesitant but it’s great,” she said. “You have a partner and that takes some of the pressure off if you’re not playing well in a hole. This gives you the chance to work as a team.”

Head-to-head matches will run from Jan. 27, 2020, to mid-May and will include a Red Division and a Blue Division. Each club will face off with the other clubs within their division with points awarded for gross, net and overall event results.

Play rotates between golf courses so seven different layouts will be used this year and a new seven-course rotation will come up in 2021.

After the division competition has crowned title holders, a playoff between the Red and Blue division winners to crown gross, net and overall champions will be held.

Team divisions for 2020 are:

Blue: Boulder City, Siena, Chimera Black, Las Vegas Golf Club, Los Prados, Revere, TPC Summerlin.

Red: Southern Nevada Golf Association Business Women, Wildhorse, Canyon Gate, Spanish Trail, Sun City Summerlin, Chimera Silver, Red Rock Country Club, Oasis.

“We have a total of 120 players and we put out 112 at each event,” Lauback says. “It’s the whole WSNGA working together to make sure we keep the train on the track. It’s a lot of fun but once players are on the course, they certainly realize it’s still a competition.”
