LAS VEGAS, NV (Sept. 10, 2024)–Team Southern Nevada Golf Association is looking to make it two straight Cobb-Whalen Cup victories when the 12-player squad meets up with the North Nevada Golf Association team for the 2024 matchup. The tournament is scheduled for Sept. 22-24, 2024, at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley, NV. — by Bill Bowman, Las Vegas Golf Insider

The Cobb Whalen event features 12 South players against 12 North players in Ryder Cup style play. The event is held every two years. It is named after Clyde Cobb and John Whalen, two men who were instrumental in growing golf in Nevada. Cobb, who passed away in 2000, was a longtime president of the Southern Nevada Golf Association and is an original member of the Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame. Whalen, who died in 1998, was the original executive director of the Northern Nevada Golf Association.

In the 2022 matchup, the South snapped a four-event losing streak to hoist the trophy.

“Our guys are always excited about this event,” said Tim Brand, South team captain. “This is the second time where all 12 players who are eligible have committed to playing. In the past, if you were 15th on the list, you might get to play if something comes up with a few players in front of you and they weren’t able to commit to play.”

That’s not the case recently.

“Now, guys mark this event on their calendar and work hard for the chance to play and that’s impressive,” Brand said.

Brand said the South team members know it’s going to be a battle to bring the trophy back to Las Vegas.

“It’s going to be a challenge because the North guys have probably played this course multiple times,” he said. “We’re going up with a group of guys and many of them haven’t played the course. It’s going to make it a little more of a challenge.”

Brand said the formula for success can be a tricky one to figure out.

“The key is always just putting together teams that will mesh well together and play well together,” he said. “We’re going up there to play our best golf with a group of guys who are excited for this chance. It’s definitely a big deal for these guys.
