Nicklaus’ Reflection Bay Hosts Both Men, Women State Amateurs

In July, the Jack Nicklaus-designed Reflection Bay Golf Club at Lake Las Vegas will host the most prestigious men’s and women’s amateur tournaments in Nevada: the Nevada State Amateur and the Women’s State Amateur. It is believed to be the first time the two major events have been played at the same course and within a week of each other. The men are scheduled July 10-12 and the women July 17-19. –By Brian Hurlburt, Las Vegas Golf Insider.

“A state amateur is the pinnacle of amateur golf in whatever state it is played, and it’s a privilege for our ownership, staff and course to host both the men and women in 2020,” says Eric Dutt, Reflection Bay general manager and the 1976 Nevada State Amateur champion. “As far as I know, this is the first time they have been played at the same course in the same year and basically back to back. I really thought this would be a cool thing to do and we will do everything we can to elevate the experience for the players.”

Rising UNLV junior Veronica Joels was the 2019 women’s champ and UNLV rising junior J.J. Gresco won the men’s event in 2019. Gresco rallied from seven strokes down with six holes to play to win. The epic comeback included an ace. Joels was dominant in winning by nine strokes and for the second straight year. The women’s event also includes additional flight winners each year.

Dutt looks forward to crowning new champions and adding them to the long list of impressive winners.

“I know it was a highlight for me when I won as a 17-year old and it’s a who’s who of amateur golf in Nevada on the trophy,” says Dutt, who went on to play at Purdue. “Reflection Bay is a challenging course and after the events we will have deserving men’s and women’s champions. For us, it was a natural to host them both and it will be an exciting two weeks.”
