SNGA Directors Win Pac Am Title

Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame and PGA of America, Southwest Section, Southern Nevada Chapter professional Mike Davis, 2019 Las Vegas Golf Hall of Fame inductee Sue May and former Southern Nevada Golf Association president Tim Quinn were named SNGA Directors for the prestigious Pacific Coast Amateur and the three took home the prestigious Esrom Puc PAC Am Directors tourney title. The tournament was played at the Championship course at University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

“Each Association appoints three directors to be on the Pacific Coast board and the host course representatives organize a Director’s Tournament the day before the official Pacific Coast Amateur starts and the three Directors play as a team,” May says. Since 1995 when the Esrom Puc was created–that’s actually Morse Cup spelled backwards–the SNGA has never won the tournament. This year we proudly get to bring the trophy home for a year.

“The format of the overall Pacific Coast Amateur tournament is each golf association that belongs to the Pacific Coast selects three of their best players to compete,” says May. “For the first two days, the players are a team playing for the Morse Cup. The other two days they play as individuals. All four days of scores count in the individual part of the tournament. The SNGA team this year was Ed Fryatt, Cameron Barzekoff and Daren Johnson. There are also presidential invites who play individually, not part of the team. Our invite was UNLV player Jack Trent.”

The team of Fryatt, Barzekoff and Johnson finished tied for 13th with Alberta. Trent finished 1 under and was the top Southern Nevada player.

As an amateur, Davis won the tournament twice as an individual in 1969 and 1970. Other notable champions include Curt Byrum, Billy Mayfair, Billy Harvey (2000) and Aaron Wise, the 2018 PGA Tour rookie of the year who now lives in Las Vegas.
