Zane Thomas Wins SNGA Southern Nevada Amateur
Las Vegas, Nevada—Zane Thomas, the former Arbor View High School player and a former member of the UNLV golf team, shot a final round even par 72 at Spanish Trail Golf and Country Club to win the Southern Nevada Amateur. Thomas held off former PGA TOUR player and UNLV All-American Edward Fryatt to win the tournament. The tournament is a major championship on the Southern Nevada Golf Association Championship Series.
Fryatt recorded a 3-under par 69 in the final round, including birdies on three of his first five holes, and both he and Thomas ended regulation tied at 5-under par. Thomas was awarded the victory when Fryatt decided against participating in a playoff because he had to catch a plane to Columbus, Ohio, where he is participating in a U.S. Open Sectional qualifying event.
Maxwell Marsico shot a final round 72 to finish alone in third place. Ben Davis also shot and even par 72 in the final round to finish fourth. Alex Lyon, Greg Horodesky and Jack Trent finished in a tie for fifth.
In the Senior Division, Gary Carpendale continues to be the class of the division as everything he enters turns to gold. Carpendale, who is the 2013 Senior Player of the Year and participant in the 2015 British Senior Amateur, took on the best that Southern Nevada had to offer on the senior side and had his way with them. A two day total of 142 led to a 5 shot win over Steve Paulsen and Brian McShane.
McShane, who is leading the Senior Net Player of the Year points race, won the Senior Net with a two day total of 143 Net. Jim LiCausi, who is in second place in the Senior Net Player of the Year standings, finished in second place.
Jim Myers put together back to back impressive rounds on a tough test at Spanish Trail Country Club to win the Southern Nevada Super Senior Amateur with a score of 145. Myers, from Oceanside, California, comes to SNGA events a few times a year to test the best players in the area. This time, he got the best of them. Stephen Wilson and Frank Abbott finished tied for second with a score of 150.
In the Super Senior Net Division, Larry Keever beat an impressive net field with a two day total of 138. Keever, who has been playing with the SNGA for 20 years or more, won his second championship of the year following an impressive win at the Summerlin Amateur. Al Kueker and Ed Stocklen finished tied for second with a score of 139.
In the Net Division, John Thompson won by 3 shots over the two time Net Player of the Player Rob Zoine. Thompson shot 74-67 for an impressive two day total of 141. Ed White finished in third place.
